How to replace your engine water pump yourself !

The engine water pump is one of many parts that need to be replaced several times over the life of a truck. Most modern water pumps last 150,000 km or more. This depends on engine maintenance and how hard the engine is being pushed.

It's time to replace the water pump, how much do you know about installing one? Here's the basics:

Let the engine and coolant cool down before getting started. Drain the coolant from the engine. Remove the water pump and clean the gasket surface of any old material. Install the new water pump and refill with fluid.

Here's some pointers you might not know:

You should flush the engine and cooling system thoroughly - just draining the block is not enough. Flushing the engine, radiator and hoses will remove any sediment or rust build-up and help prolong the life of the new water pump.

Be aware of all the hoses and attachments - the procedure is not as simple as removing the water pump on some modern engines. Many times there will be brackets, housings or after-coolers in the way just to gain access to the pump.

Do not use straight water by itself - Gone is the day when you can use straight water in a radiator. Coolant only or a proper mixture of water and coolant with a SCA is required for today's modern engines. Adding Supplemental Coolant Additive by itself or the proper coolant filter containing SCA will prevent corrosion, cavitation and electrolysis.

You are not done - The water pump is installed, all attachments are inspected and coolant is replaced. It does not mean you are ready to hit the road. Start the engine and let it idle until it reaches normal operating temperature. Do not be alarmed if a small amount of coolant is coming out of the water pump weep hole, it does not necessarily mean it's faulty. The ceramic of the mechanical seal may not have had a chance to settle yet.

Final check - Once the engine test run is complete, shut the engine down, let it cool and top-up the radiator if necessary. (Do not remove the rad cap when the engine is hot)

Now you should be ready to replace your new water pump yourself.
